Memories of 9/11 at Newark Liberty International Airport

Newark Liberty International Airport has the dubious distinction of being the airport where the ill-fated United Airlines flight 93 took off before it was hijacked by terrorists who may have intended to make the aircraft smash into an important government structure in Washington, DC (such as the White House.) Instead, passengers on board attacked the terrorists and diverted the plane to Shanksville, Pennsylvania where it crashed. This is why Newark International Airport was renamed Newark Liberty International Airport. The name also refers to the US icon - the Statue of Liberty - which is located some distance away from the airport.
