Sacramento International Airport Defies 9/11 Terrorists with Addition of New Carriers
Sacramento International Airport is a public airport presently served by
one commuter-type carrier and a total of 14 major airlines, inclusive of
the addition of seven new airlines. These seven new carriers, namely, Air
Canada, ExpressJet, JetBlue, Hawaiian, Frontier, Mexicana, and Aloha) were
all added to the list of airlines serving Sacramento International Airport
even after the different 9/11 aircraft hijackings occurred in 2001, showing
that the airport had the capacity to operate even under dire circumstances.
New name
Sacramento International Airport only came by its present name relatively
recently (in 1996 to be exact.) Ironically, it didn't start hosting
international flights until way into 2002, with the first international non-
stop service offered by Mexicana to Guadalejara.
Facilities of the airport
Sacramento International Airport only has two runways at present, though
the entire airport occupies a total of 5,500 acres. It also has two
terminals (Terminal A and B) which both have their own respective mix of
retail stores and restaurants to serve the eating and shopping needs of
travelers.
Terminal A hosts Nelson's News and Gifts, Starbucks, Sbarros, and Cinnabon
in its Public Area. More concessions can be spotted at the Post-Security
Area, such as Shoe Shine Palace, Nelson's Books, PGA Golf, and Vino Volo.
Brooks Brothers will be located in this Post-Security Area come Fall of
2007 while Butter of London is tentatively set to open by Winter of 2007 up
to sometime in 2008.
Terminal B offers the services of TCBY, Prospector's Pub, Chili's Too, Java
City, Starbucks, CNBC Store, and Wolfgang Puck Express in its Public Area.
The Post-Security Area of this terminal is home to Capitol Marketplace,
Pyramid Alehouse, and Gordon Biersch at present though another Starbucks is
also planned within this space.
The International Terminal is devoted solely to arrivals only for carriers
Frontier Airlines and Mexicana.
The Sacramento County Airport System is sponsoring the wireless Internet
access (or wi-fi system) currently being offered to passengers at the
indoor public areas at no charge.
Proposed changes at the airport
Sacramento International Airport intends to construct a new terminal with a
budget of $1.1 billion, which should open by 2012. This plan has entered
the environmental review phase this 2007 and it remains to be seen if the
Sacramento County Board of Supervisors will permit the project to push
through. The plan also calls for the elimination of Terminal B in its
entirety. These changes should help Sacramento International Airport
improve the level of its service to the Sacramento region, and California
state as well.
Port of Entry Airport
Sacramento International Airport currently has the status of a port of
entry airport, meaning this is where people can legally enter the United
States, in keeping with its role as an international airport. Thus,
travelers will find that there are personnel who will ask for visas and
passports from them, and even check their luggage to see if they are
importing illegal contraband into the US.
