Memories of 9/11 at Newark Liberty International AirportNewark Liberty International Airport has the dubious distinction of being
the airport where the ill-fated United Airlines flight 93 took off before
it was hijacked by terrorists who may have intended to make the aircraft
smash into an important government structure in Washington, DC (such as the
White House.) Instead, passengers on board attacked the terrorists and
diverted the plane to Shanksville, Pennsylvania where it crashed. This is
why Newark International Airport was renamed Newark Liberty International
Airport. The name also refers to the US icon - the Statue of Liberty -
which is located some distance away from the airport.
Newark Liberty International Airport is one of the airports found under the
jurisdiction of The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Its three
runways, one helipad, and other airport facilities occupy a total of 2,027
acres of land.
Carriers operating from Newark Liberty International Airport
Continental Airlines uses up much of the capacity of Newark Liberty
International Airport, being the biggest tenant of the airport. Continental
occupies part of Terminal A and the entire capacity of Terminal C, the
latter being the Global Gateway of Continental. This carrier is the biggest
air service provider for the New York metro area.
Continental used to operate the longest continuous scheduled airline route
in the world which starts at Newark Liberty International Airport and
terminates in Hong Kong. This record was later broken by Singapore Airlines
with its Newark-to-Singapore flight route. Continental is currently
awaiting government approval for it to commence with its Newark-to-Shanghai
flight route by 2009.
Other carriers which operate from Newark Liberty International Airport are
American Airlines, Air Canada, and Alaska Airlines (among others.)
Newark Liberty International Airport - an Intermodal AirportTerminals at Newark Liberty International Airport are connected to the
AirTrain Newark monorail system, which is in turn linked to the Newark
Liberty International Airport Rail Link Station. That Rail Link Station is
then linked to the New Jersey Transit and Amtrak service. Passengers can
ride on the monorail free of charge, but those opting to ride the Rail Link
system as well must pay a fee of $5.50.
Newark Liberty International Airport passengers can rely on bus service as
well to venture from and to the airport and surrounding areas. Olympia
Trails, Airporter, and New Jersey Transit are some bus companies serving
Newark Liberty.
If you do not want to ride in a bus, perhaps you can flag down a taxi at
the airport instead, but you have to pay a flat rate.
Hotels serving the airport
People with Newark Liberty International Airport as their destination can
take advantage of the hotels that are now operating near the airport. These
hotels have either budget pricing packages or are moderately priced
(compared to Manhattan hotels which can be quite expensive.) The rooms may
be 25% to 50% cheaper than Manhattan hotels, while parking can be up to $35
less costly per day. Other disadvantages of staying in Manhattan are the
terrible traffic situation, and soaring parking rates.
Newark Liberty International Airport could be nice to visit then, if you
want to stay within your budget.
