Manchester International Airport Switches to New NameIt is now official - Manchester International Airport has adopted a new
name to reflect its growing role as an air travel facility for Boston,
Massachusetts. As of 2006, Manchester International Airport has become
Manchester Boston Regional Airport. The name change is expected to help
inform air travelers how near the airport is to the city of Boston, and to
the vital business centers situated north of Boston. It also shows that
Manchester Boston Regional Airport is now predominantly a domestic flights
airport, though Air Canada operates a flight to Toronto from the airport.
The move to adopt the new name was prompted by the results of a telephone
survey conducted in the western US area (specifically, in 15 large metro
areas). The point of the survey was to determine how aware the respondents
were about Manchester International Airport, and its nearness to Boston as
well. The survey showed that only a mere 3% had ever heard of Manchester
International Airport and that it could be found within New Hampshire
state. On the other hand, a whopping 93% had heard of Boston itself, with
76% where aware which state Boston belonged to. In fact, many of the
respondents mistakenly assumed Manchester International Airport was located
within England rather than New Hampshire.
Existing services at the airport
The ticket counters at the Manchester International Airport (or Manchester
Boston Regional Airport) usually start to open from 4 am to 4:30 am. Food
stores and retail shops open an hour later at 5 or 5:30 am.
One advantage of being a ticketed air traveler is that you can avail of the
free airport shuttle service that originate from certain Boston locations
so you can get to the airport on time. One location where you can get on
the shuttle service is the Sullivan Square MBTA Subway Station; the other
is the Anderson Regional Transportation Center of Woburn. To avail of free
service, you need to present printed travel itinerary, boarding pass, or
airline ticket for the same day released by Manchester International
Airport.
Since Manchester Boston Regional Airport does not provide international
travel services for the most part, you will need to look outside the
airport for a bank where you can exchange foreign currency.
Parking at the airport
If you prefer to be driven to or drive your own vehicle to the airport, you
may need parking to be provided. Parking can be on hourly, daily, or long-
term basis. Hourly parking is offered by Lots A and B. Daily parking can be
availed at the Parking Garage which offers covered parking for 4,800 slots.
Long-term parking is provided by Lots C to G. Unfortunately, you cannot
reserve a slot for yourself in advance since parking is offered on a first-
come, first-serve basis.
An Authorized Escort Pass can be issued to people who need to accompany a
passenger up to the gate, because the passenger may be an elderly person, a
physically-disabled person who requires special assistance, or a minor.
