Honolulu International Airport - Your Gateway to Hawaii |
|
|
Hello Hawaii? Can I come over? Sure you can - if you make Honolulu
International Airport your next destination that is. Honolulu International
Airport is the main airport of the state of Hawaii, and also of the city of
Honolulu.
Expansion plans of the airport
The Honolulu International Airport is poised to expand with an influx of
$2.3 billion that should help the airport become a more modern and
progressive air travel facility. The modernization plan was introduced by
Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle in 2006 and should take 12 years to be
completed.
In the initial five years of the program, the airport will initiate
projects to enhance service to passengers while improving operational and
security efficiencies. Among the airport facilities which will be
refurbished during this period are: sprinkler systems, drains, electrical
systems, escalators, elevators, restrooms, and the air conditioning. In
addition, airport aprons, runways, baggage screening systems, ticket
counters and passenger terminals are expected to be kicked up a notch when
it comes to quality.
The airport must further take steps to meet higher federal standards when
it comes to crash fire safety, perimeter security, runway safety, and storm
water systems.
To meet its long-term aim of increasing passenger capacity with emphasis on
efficiency and convenience, the Honolulu International Airport must also
increase its public parking options, holding room capacity, and numbers of
passenger loading bridges, ramp space, and gates.
Current services of the airport
Honolulu International Airport presently shares airfield space with the
Hickam Air Force Base. The main runway of the airport (dubbed the Reef
Runway) is also considered an alternative landing site by the space shuttle
program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. There are
three other principal runways, while two offshore runways are designated
for use by seaplanes.
There are three terminal buildings within Honolulu International Airport,
with interterminal transportation between different concourses of the Main
Terminal and Interisland Terminal, as well as between the ticket counters
of all the terminals, provided by the WikiWiki buses (Wiki being Hawaiian
for fast.)
Ground transportation at the airport
The Airport Waikiki Express is a round-the-clock service which can bring
