Top Airport in World Gets Stricter about SecurityHartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the top airport in the
world, based on the number of passengers that it accommodated in 2004.
Because it processes so many passengers (and in light of the 9/11 aircraft
hijackings), the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
has imposed strict security measures that all passengers have to follow,
both for their own protection and the safety of other passengers and the
crew of the aircraft.
Security Measures at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
One odd aspect of the security measures at this airport is that all
passengers are required to remove both of their shoes and deposit these on
the X-ray conveyor belt at any of the particular security checkpoints
maintained within the airport.
Passengers may only bring along a maximum of 90 milliters (or 3 ounces) of
any liquids, gels or aerosols which must be contained within a see-through
plastic bag of 1 liter (or 1 quart) capacity. These should also be
subjected to X-ray examination by security personnel. Each passenger can
only take with him one such see-through bag with its contents. If you have
other such liquids, gels or aerosols in your carry-on baggage, you need to
declare those to the security personnel so that they can screen the items.
Every type of coat must be placed on the X-ray belt as well for X-ray
examination. In addition, baggage must be thoroughly scrutinized 100% of
the time.
A complete list of items that are banned from being brought on board the
plane is provided on the airport website.
Because of all the additional security precautions imposed, passengers need
to arrive at least 90 minutes before their flight is scheduled to depart to
allow for complete inspection by security personnel.
Shopping and Dining within the airport
If you should arrive a wee bit too early at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta
International Airport, even banking on tight security inspections, then you
might want to do some shopping and dining while you wait. Over 200
concessionaires serve the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
for your retail shopping, and dining needs, as well as other service-
oriented needs.
Travel with Children
Another strict security measure imposed at this very busy airport is that
even children (from infants to school-age youngsters) need to be inspected
by the security personnel. Infant equipment such as baby carriers and
strollers have to pass through the X-ray machine as well. However, do not
be worried that your children will be separated from you at any point. No
child need be traumatized by the experience if the parents submit to the
discreet security checks. While the infant equipment is being checked by X-
ray, you should carry the child yourself then put the child back in the
infant equipment after screening. Children with Special Disabilities are
also covered by this rule, so you need to inform the security personnel in
charge that your child deserves special attention.
All these security precautions are important so that everyone, from the
aircraft crew down to the smallest child passenger, can enjoy a safe,
uneventful, and comfortable trip to their chosen destination.
