Air Travel is Booming at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport

Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport of Broward County, FL, showed higher passenger traffic as of June 2007, with both domestic travel and international travel going up significantly. Most of these increases were attributed to more passengers patronizing the low-cost airlines of the airport. Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport recently underwent an upgrade of its facilities valued at $695 million.

Zero discrepancies again at airport

At the same time, Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport received a zero-discrepancies rating again from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the ninth straight year. Among the airport services which the FAA considers before granting such a rating are: records maintenance, Aircraft Rescue Firefighting, public protection, fueling operations and storage, self-inspection programs conducted per day, emergency response preparedness, airport lighting and marking, safety of certain areas including locations beside taxiways and runways, and taxiway and runway surfaces.

Interested in a metered taxi concession?

Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport is soliciting bids for the metered taxi concession of the airport. It is not necessary that a bidder own taxicabs outright but should be able to describe in full how he intends to maximize the effectiveness of operating the metered taxi service and offering taxicab dispatch services at the airport.

More parking at airport

Due to the aforementioned expansion of the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, the parking areas have become modernized and more spacious, located just minutes away from the terminals. Parking options come in various forms: there is Valet or Premier Parking; Red Lot parking; Tower Lot parking; Park 'n Save Lot parking; and Daily and Hourly parking as well. If you or someone with you is physically-disabled, there are also appropriate parking options for your party. Transportation services In addition, the airport now has a spanking-new Rental Car Center where car rental companies can operate their business, as well as allowing shuttles to pick up passengers. You can inquire with hotels in the areas whether they offer free shuttle pick-up at the airport for passengers who reserve a room with them. Tri-County Airport Express is one rental company which can lend you a luxury van or sedan at zone fare rates. This option can be as shared-ride transportation or as part of the door-to-door clause. You can contact the company from the Transportation Podium as you exit the baggage area found at the lower level curbside.

If you need a cab instead, you might want to hire a Yellow Cab taxi. Such

taxis are always waiting 24 hours a day at the Transportation Podium as well. Up to five people can ride one cab, based on the fare shown on the taxi meters. Broward County regulates cab fares by law.

Broward County Transit buses are also available but you will have to check

their daily schedules first. The same applies to the commuter train feeder buses of the Tri-Rail system. Expansion plans of the airport At present, the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport is in talks regarding future expansion plans. One area of special interest to the airport is the proposed expansion of ancillary and terminal facilities within a 10-year period starting 2010 and ending in 2020.
