Ontario International Airport Adopts New Name of LA/Ontario International Airport
It's official - as of 2006, Ontario International Airport was renamed the
LA/Ontario International Airport instead. The move to rename the Ontario,
California public airport was initiated so that people would not think that
the airport is located within Ontario, Canada - and also to bring in
travelers who would otherwise have gone to the nearby Los Angeles
International Airport.
Expansion plans of the airport
Ontario International Airport presently operates three major terminals,
though big changes are currently planned for those terminals. Under the
existing master plan for the airport, the present international terminal is
to be demolished so that the current Terminal 1 can assume responsibility
for international passengers. Five new terminals are set to be built among
the current Terminals 2 and 4. Southwest Airlines gets exclusive use of one
of those terminals. Another terminal will be devoted to United Airlines
alone. Other carriers serving the airport will have to share use of the
other three terminals left.
Airport is popular movie location
Many Hollywood films have used the Ontario International Airport as the
backdrop and location of scenes in their scripts. Even television
commercials and hit television shows have followed suit as well.
For example, the film Red Eye was shot within Ontario International Airport
back in 2005. The action series "24" situated one season's plot context in
the airport which was allegedly taken over by terrorists. Another film
called Zodiac (released in 2007) also based its final scenes in the
airport.
Advantages and disadvantages of the airport over LAX
One reason for all this attention from movie and tv production outfits
could be the great modern facilities within the airport. Another thing that
draws travelers to Ontario International Airport is that, compared to LAX
(or Los Angeles International Airport), traffic is less at Ontario. Ontario
has many major carriers under its roster of airlines serving the airport.
However, prices of flights at Ontario are a bit higher than those at LAX.
Still, corporate executives seem to prefer Ontario International Airport
over LAX anyway.
Airport officials designed Ontario International Airport terminal gates to
follow a linear pattern which greatly helps reduce air travel delays by
allowing airplanes to follow the least arduous traffic pattern for both
landing and departure flights. Los Angeles International Airport, on the
other hand, is presently beset by traffic congestion and delays which gives
it a poor customer service reputation among air transportation passengers
and the industry itself.
Carriers serving the airport
Ontario International Airport presently enjoys the services of well-known
airlines such as: US Airways, United Express, United Airlines, Southwest
Airlines, Jet Blue, Express Jet, Delta Airlines, Continental Airlines,
Azteca, ATA, American Airlines, America West, Alaska Airlines, and
Aeromexico.
These carriers benefit from the vibrant air travel activities for business
and leisure of almost 5 million passengers in east Los Angeles County,
north Orange County, Riverside County, and San Bernardino County within the
state of California.
So choose Orlando International Airport now as your Southern California air
travel destination.
