Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), located just twenty minutes south of Amsterdam in Netherlands, has consistently been named by various airport reviewers from all over the world as one of the best airports not just in Europe but in the entire globe. The airport has won numerous awards and honors in the past because its operations always run as smooth as clockwork, despite its being one of the busiest hubs in Europe, the fourth busiest airport in Europe in terms of passenger traffic. AMS is owned by the Schiphol Group.

As the most important airport in Netherlands, AMS is home to the country's flag carrier, KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines). Martinair and Transavia also have AMS as their home base. AMS has only one terminal, and this terminal is divided into three departure halls, to which piers and concourses are attached.

Ground Transport

Because AMS consists of only one terminal with interconnected piers and concourses, transferring from one departure/arrival hall to another is possible by just walking. There are still free shuttle buses servicing the airport nonetheless. Public buses run routes that include AMS, with their drop-off and pick-up point located in front of Arrivals Hall 2. Schiphol Group also operates its own taxi service, Schiphol Travel Taxis, for the passengers arriving at AMS.

There is a railway station located underneath Schiphol Plaza in the central hall of AMS, with trains going directly to Amsterdam Centraal Station. These trains also provide transportation to other destinations within Netherlands and to other major cities in Europe. The Thalys high speed train takes passengers through major European destinations, but this is by reservation only. Ticketing machines for these railway services are found in Schiphol Plaza and at Arrival Halls 1 to 3. The bookings for the reservations-only means of transport from AMS to other destinations can be made through the AMS official website, http://www.schiphol.nl.

Car Parks and Car Hire

AMS makes use of three parking facilities. P1 and P2 are connected via covered walkway to the terminal and to Schiphol Plaza; these two parking facilities are for short-term use only. The long-term parking lot is designated as P3, and free shuttle buses transport passengers between P3 and the terminal 24 hours a day. Also available is a reservation-only VIP valet service.

Car rental companies have their own offices at AMS and they are located at Schiphol Plaza itself. Operating from AMS are Avis, Budget, Hertz, National Car Rental and Sixt. It is possible to make reservations with car rental companies directly through the AMS official website.

Hotels within the Airport

The on-airport hotel located in AMS is called the Hotel Mercure Schiphol Terminal, located right within the terminal itself. Aside from the Hotel Mercure Schiphol Terminal, there are other hotels located within the vicinity of AMS, and they include Best Western Amsterdam Airport, Courtyard Amsterdam Airport, Hilton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol Hotel, Ibis Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Sheraton Hotel, and Van de Valk Hotel Schiphol. These hotels around AMS provide free shuttle service to and from the airport.
