Frankfurt Airport (FRA), or Flughafen Frankfurt am Main, is the largest airport in Germany as well as the third largest in the world. FRA is owned
and run by Fraport AG, and it is located in the state of Hesse, in the city
of Frankfurt am Main, which is the financial and transportation center of
Germany. As the most important international hub in Germany, FRA is also
home to Lufthansa, the flag carrier of Germany.
FRA operates two terminals. Terminal 1 is used mostly by Lufthansa and its
Star Alliance partners. It is divided into three concourses. On the other
hand, Terminal 2 is divided into two concourses. There is talk of having a
third terminal built.
Aside from these two terminals, Lufthansa operates a First Class Terminal for its passengers riding first class as well as those belonging to the
highest tier of their Miles and More rewards program. In the First Class
Terminal, the privileged passengers enjoy perks such as individualized
customs and security screening, valet parking, a Mercedes chauffeur service
from terminal to airplane, dining in a white-linen restaurant and other
such luxury perks.
Ground Transport
Transporting passengers from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 is done using people
movers and Sky Line, the airport's free shuttle service. Outside the
terminals, there are buses running routes to different spots within the
airport.
Transport from FRA to other destinations is made possible using various
railway systems. The railway stations are located beneath Terminal 1.
Platforms 1 to 3 are used by the S-Bahn lines S8 and S9, which take
passengers from FRA to central Frankfurt and Hauptbahnhof. The AiRail
system makes use of platforms 4 to 7; its high-speed trains are taken by
passengers going to Cologne and Stuttgart. Other destinations are served
by the RegionalExpress and StadtExpress trains.
Taxi stations may be found outside both terminals. A bus bay can be found outside the Arrivals Hall of Terminal 1 and the Arrivals/Departure Hall of
Terminal 2. Lufthansa has the Lufthansa bus line, which takes passengers
to Hahn Airport, as well as to Heidelberg, Mannheim and Strasbourg. The
station for the Lufthansa bus line is in front of Arrivals Hall B of
Terminal 1.
Car Parks and Car Hire
The terminals of FRA are each equipped with its own parking facility, both
multi-story parking buildings and underground parking. These parking areas
are designated with the P sign. Terminal 1 has P1 to P5, while Terminal 2
is serviced by P8 and P9. These parking areas are accessible 24 hours a
day.
Rental car offices in FRA are located in Arrivals Hall A of Terminal 1 and on Level 3 of Terminal 2. Car rental companies offering services in FRA
are Alamo, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National and Sixt.
Hotels within the Airport
The nearest hotel to FRA is the Sheraton Hotel, which is connected via
covered walkway to Terminal 1. Aside from the Sheraton, there are at least
25 hotels that are located around FRA and offering free shuttle transport
to and from FRA.
