Can London Heathrow Airport Regain its Allure as Travel Destination?

London Heathrow Airport is considered the third-busiest airport in the world, based on the number of passengers it served as of 2004. However, TV news reports have shown that London Heathrow Airport came under fire this year for imposing strict security measures that tended to drag on and inconvenienced many passengers in the process. Is London Heathrow Airport losing its magic touch at serving travelers?

Terminals at the airport

Like fellow top-ranking airport Chicago O'Hare International Airport, London Heathrow Airport operates four terminals to serve domestic and international carriers. Terminal 1 is responsible for domestic flights, and also for majority of flights for Europe by UK-based carriers. It also serves South African Airways, and EL AL. Terminal 2 handles certain long- distance flights, but mostly non-UK carriers headed for European destinations. Terminal 3 acts as a long-distance hub for Asia Pacific, Asian, South American, and US airlines while majority of the African carriers also use this terminal. Terminal 4 benefits majority of the long- distance flights of British Airways as well as certain European carriers too. In addition, Quantas and KLM are based at Terminal 4.

Common problems of airport

One historical and nagging problem that London Heathrow Airport contends with periodically is fog rolling in and making air travel difficult for pilots. As a safety precaution, flights at London Heathrow Airport have to be cancelled to prevent air travel disasters. Sometimes, as many as 350 flights have to be cancelled until the heavy cloud of fog dissipates and pilots of grounded aircraft can see their way clearly again.

There is really no practical solution to this age-old phenomenon aside from

pilots and passengers alike playing the waiting game and letting the fog disappear on its own. Lodging in London hotels London Heathrow Airport is 15 miles away from London city proper, so you may have quite a distance to travel before you can make it to the city. Fortunately, the distance between London city and London Heathrow Airport is cut by the presence of The Continental Hotel 3 miles from the London Heathrow Airport. Other hotels serving the London Heathrow Airport are the Selfridge A Thistle Hotel, Jumeirah Carlton Tower, and the Langham Hotel London (among others.) Vehicle rental services at airport

Travelers to London Heathrow Airport can choose to rent a vehicle from the

different vehicle rental services that serve the airport. You can even select the type of vehicle you prefer to ride in, such as a Compact Car, a Luxury Car, a Sports Car, and even a Pick-Up Truck, if that is what you fancy (among other vehicle-type choices.) Vehicles can also be either manual or automatic transmission vehicles.

Expansion of London Heathrow Airport

London Heathrow Airport is currently constructing a fifth terminal scheduled for completion by 2008. When finished, the additional terminal should help London Heathrow Airport serve a projected 90 million passengers. Perhaps this will help London Heathrow Airport regain its status as the air travel jewel of London, England.
