Are you Familiar with Incheon International Airport? The name Incheon International Airport may not ring any bells, if you are not from South Korea and nearby countries that is. Actually, Incheon
International Airport is the biggest of South Korea's airports, and one of
the biggest Asian airports there is.
Incheon International Airport only came into existence in 2001, after the
old Gimpo Airport was re-oriented to handle only domestic flights for South
Korea (except for one route which terminates in Tokyo International
Airport.) Despite being a very young airport, Incheon International Airport
is not lacking in up-to-date conveniences - including excellent medical
inspection equipment, and a high-tech security system - which were set in
place due to the spread of different epidemics within Southern Asia and
terrorist activities. These systems have granted Incheon International
Airport the honor of being the most technologically-assisted airport in
Asia. Incheon International Airport was even deemed the best among the
world's airports in the 2005 AETRA passenger survey.
Another distinction is that Incheon International Airport has garnered a 5-
star rating from the Skytrax organization.
If you want to hop from an international arrivals flight that disembarks at
Incheon International Airport, to a domestic destinations flight at Gimpo
Airport, this is possible due to the construction of a highway linking both
airports. In addition, you could also try riding the Incheon International
Airport Railroad which has a stop at Gimpo Airport.
Passenger Facilities
Incheon International Airport has the third-biggest of passenger terminals
in the world, which is the main passenger terminal. This terminal is
currently the biggest in South Korea, based on the 496,000 square meters it
occupies. The main passenger terminal is divided into the following levels
with their corresponding services:
- Basement level 1. Many concessions can be found here to serve
the airport community and passengers. To name a few, there are
pharmacies, supermarkets, bookstores, music retailers, and bakeries on
this floor alone.
- First floor is for arrivals. Concessions can be found on this
floor too, along with the Millenium Hall.
- Second floor. This floor is subdivided into the Airside Area,
and also the Landside Area.
- Third floor is for departures only. It is also subdivided into
an Airside Area, and then the Landside Area.
- Fourth floor. Head for this floor if you are looking for the
VIP departure lounge, and other such type of departure lounges. There
are also other services such as an airport image gallery, souvenir
shops, and fine-dining restaurants (among others.)
Expansion of the airport
Incheon International Airport is currently in its fourth phase of expansion
plans. When growth has been completed, it is expected that Incheon
International Airport will have the capacity to process 100 million
passengers every year. In addition, the airport's cargo processing capacity
should also increase to 7 million metric tones per year. The fourth phase
should result in the successful construction of 4 parallel runways, 4
satellite concourses, 128 gates, and 2 passenger terminals. The fourth
phase should terminate by 2020, after which Incheon International Airport
should be ranked at least among the ten-busiest airports of the world.
