Malaysia Shines through Kuala Lumpur International Airport

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is the major international airport of Malaysia. It is located about 50 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. It is one of the younger airports of the world, since it only started operating in 1998. It was built with around $3.5 billion US dollars.

An airport that runs non-stop throughout the year, Kuala Lumpur International Airport acts as a major aviation hub in southeast Asia and manages air travel for 35 million people (as well as cargo movements totaling 1.2 million tones annually.) At present, Kuala Lumpur International Airport is considered the hub for AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines Cargo, and Malaysia Airlines. The airport is also part of the kangaroo route of Malaysia Airlines.

Expansion of the airport

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is being expanded in phases - once all three phases have been completed by 2020, the airport should be able to handle up to 100 million passengers per year. At the moment, the airport is considered one of the biggest airport sites anywhere in the world.

Some problems that the airport had to contend with recently are the spread of the Bird Flu virus, the SARS epidemic, and the East Asian financial crisis. The East Asian financial crisis was a particularly big obstacle for the airport to hurdle, since some carriers even stopped their new flights to Kuala Lumpur because the route proved unprofitable.

Among the construction projects in the Masterplan are the building of a new satellite building, and a new runway. Other facilities that should be completed by 2020 are two mega-terminals connected to two satellite buildings apiece, and a total of four runways.

In addition, the airport will also be home to a wetlands nature preserve, hotels, a shopping mall, a theme park, golf courses, and hiking trails. The Low Cost Carrier Terminal is also expected to be refurbished so that it can be served by wide-bodied airplanes owned by AirAsiaX (the initial low- cost carrier of the country geared for long-haul trips.) Eventually though, the whole Low Cost Carrier Terminal may be replaced by a permanent Low Cost Carrier building housed between satellite building A and the main terminal building.

Services at the airport

Kuala Lumpur International Airport followed the example of Munich International Airport by building its own diffusion chamber for explosive goods too. The chamber, which required an investment of about RM 1.6 million to be built, allows highly explosive materials to be safely detonated.

The airport also has two fire stations that can handle fires resulting from aircraft accidents within the airport premises. The fire stations are fitted with appropriate emergency and fire rescue equipment for this purpose.

Another unique feature of Kuala Lumpur International Airport is that it maintains an animal hotel which can be used to house livestock and pets during the transshipment process. This is the first six-star hotel of its kind anywhere in the world.

Like other international airports throughout the world, Kuala Lumpur International Airport took steps to improve its screening and security systems to avoid potential terrorist activities aboard aircraft docking at the airport. The additional systems are maintained through a security surcharge added to the cost of airport services.
