Hong Kong International Airport has the Marks of a Very Busy AirportHong Kong International Airport was the 17th-busiest airport in the world,
as of 2004 passenger traffic levels. To further clarify its leading
position among the world's airports, Hong Kong International Airport is
currently considered the 5th-busiest airport for international air travel.
As a sign of such dynamic activity, the airport handles over 800 aircraft
arrivals and departures on a daily basis for the more than 85 carriers that
use Hong Kong International Airport as a destination. Airlines based at
Hong Kong International Airport fly to over 150 other airports throughout
the world (inclusive of around 40 cities in mainland China.) An additional
sign of the busy state of Hong Kong International Airport is the fact that
it handled the air travel movement
of 44.4 million passengers and 3.6
million tones of air cargo in 2006.
The airport's importance to the Pearl River Delta region
Hong Kong International Airport aims to improve service to the Pearl River
Delta region by enhancing the multi-modal transportation system between the
airport and the Pearl River Delta.
Examples of this multi-modal transport
system are:
- The SkyPier ferry service - Pearl River Delta residents can rely on
the ferry service to take them to the Hong Kong International Airport
so that they can catch a flight without passing through complicated
immigration and customs checkpoints. This makes air travel simpler for
Pearl River Delta communities. A permanent SkyPier facility is
currently being built and is expected to be finished by 2009.
- Coach trips - 240 trips via coach are conducted daily to serve Pearl
River Delta residents from 70 towns and cities in the region who wish
to visit any of the 160 drop-off destinations.
- SkyLimo - this is another cross-boundary service that provides
limousine service to Pearl River Delta locations.
- First agreement between Hong Kong International Airport and Pearl
River Delta
airport - Airport Authority Hong Kong and Zhuhai Municipal People's
Government have agreed to jointly manage Zhuhai Airport over a 20-
year period.
Amenities and Services of the Hong Kong International Airport
Hong Kong International Airport currently operates two terminals which each
have amenities and services that make air travel more pleasant for airport
passengers. Terminal 1 has the SkyMart while Terminal 2 has its SkyPlaza
which both aim to provide retail, catering and entertainment opportunities
to air travel passengers with time on their hands before their flight.
Expansion of the Hong Kong International Airport
Officials at the Hong Kong International Airport have set aside $4.5
billion for future expansion and enhancement of airport facilities. This
growth and facilities improvement program is to be implemented in phases
and should be completed in 2010.
Another development is the impending arrival of the Airbus 380 (the biggest
type of commercial aircraft in the world) for commercial trial runs at the
Hong Kong International Airport.

much so that TravelWeekly China, Business Traveller China, and
